The number of people killed by swine flu crossed a symbolic barrier this weekend when it outstripped those who have died from the bird flu virus, as criticism grew of insufficient work to study how best to treat the pandemic.
The latest figures from the World Health Organisation show there have now been 311 confirmed deaths around the world from the H1N1 virus first identified in Mexico this spring, and just over 70,000 infections in 113 countries.
