Disarming militias may be Maliki’s toughest task

Disarming or demobilising Iraq’s multitude of militias will be perhaps the toughest task facing the country’s new national unity government as it tries to curb the country’s anarchy and promote national reconciliation.

Shia Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said on Sunday that ‘’weapons should be in the hands of the government’’ and ‘’we should put an end to militias,’’ while US President George W. Bush earlier dubbed them ‘’the main challenge’’ for Iraq’s new leaders.
