Nike is understood to be behind a takeover approach for Umbro that comes just a day after the England football team it sponsors lost a vital qualifying match for the Euro 2008 championship.
Shares in the Cheshire-based sportswear brand, whose most prized asset is the England sponsorship, rose almost 30 per cent after it announced it had received an approach from an unnamed party, valuing the company at £223m ($456m).
