Jean-Claude Trichet, European Central Bank president, has urged eurozone members to renew their focus on competitiveness after an ECB conference highlighted how the euro's success will depend on action by national governments.

Mr Trichet issued his appeal while the European Union summit failed to draw up new financial priorities.
