Land of the awkward squad

Whenever I hear politicians talking about national identity or pride, my hackles rise and my heart sinks.

I feel particularly hopeless when I hear politicians trying to define and promote Britishness: surely they should know that Britain is merely an island in which different national groups live in a pragmatic political union. I don't know anyone who describes themselves as "British" - or who really feels British.
