Jacqui Smith was given the biggest promotion in Gordon Brown’s cabinet reshuffle, becoming Britain’s first ever female home secretary in a government which has only a handful of women in senior posts.

The 44-year old Oxford-educated former economics teacher is relatively unknown outside Westminster, serving in the cabinet since 2006 in the back-room position of chief whip.
