Japan national anthem dispute deepens

A group of Tokyo school teachers on Thursday vowed to take to the Supreme Court their battle not to have to sing Japan’s national anthem at graduation ceremonies.

The Tokyo District Court rejected a lawsuit filed by a group of 172 teachers when it ruled that it was legal for the capital’s Board of Education to force them to sing, and that punishments for refusal – including salary cuts and suspensions – were not too severe.
