SOME HIGH-PROFILE HEDGE FUND FAILURES

Since 1999 the US Securities and Exchange Commission has taken action against 98 hedge funds, while Washington's Commodity Futures Trading Commission has acted against 55 since 2001.

There are estimated to beabout 10,000 hedge funds, and close to half of all new funds fail due to weak performance - a much bigger danger than fraud. But the volume of legal action demonstrates the need for investors to tread warily.
