Brown handed temporary reprieve

Gordon Brown’s threat to snub the signing of the European Union reform treaty in Lisbon next week appeared to be lifting on Wednesday night, after the EU’s Portuguese presidency bailed him out on the sensitive issue of workers’ rights.

The prime minister had claimed that a “diary clash” could prevent him from attending the long-planned signing ceremony in the Portuguese capital.
