The average rate for benchmark US mortgages fell to a record low level last week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

The 30-year fixed home loan rate averaged 4.89 per cent, below the previous all-time low of 4.99 per cent set in June 2003. The association’s weekly survey has been conducted since 1990.
