Britain sees ‘mission’ to spread democracy

Britain must steadfastly pursue a moral “mission” to spread democracy throughout the world in spite of mistakes made in Iraq and Afghanistan, the UK foreign secretary said on Tuesday.

David Miliband warned that the rise of China meant that “we can no longer take the forward march of democracy for granted”. Supporting democratic government with the full range of diplomatic and military tools satisfied both a “moral impulse” and Britain’s national interest, he said.
