The US construction market will recover more quickly than the UK but will still “chug along near the bottom” until next year, according to Geoff Drabble, chief executive of Ashtead, the equipment rental group.
The company, which does about 90 per cent of its business in the US, expects the previous American construction downturn in 2002-03 to mean that there is less fat to be trimmed from the industry.
