An appeal court in southern China has ordered the retrial of a lawyer originally sentenced to a four-year prison term, upending a case that had attracted widespread concern among the country’s legal community.

Liu Yao had been representing villagers embroiled in a land dispute with local officials in Dongyuan county, Guandong province. They claimed their land had been requisitioned for a hydropower project without due process and without proper compensation.
