The UK government's support for biofuels risks failing to deliver significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and could be environmentally damaging, the Royal Society, the UK's leading scientific academy, said yesterday, writes Ed Crooks . The society called on the UK and the EU to reform biofuels policy to give more support to fuels that delivered greater cuts in emissions.

The report published yesterday said biofuels could play a role in strengthening energy security and fighting climate change, but said the EU's biofuels directive risked encouraging technologies "that miss opportunities to deliver reductions in greenhouse gas emissions".
