The European Union competition authorities last week highlighted dubious pharmaceutical industry practices that have cost taxpayers €3bn since the start of the decade. The recommendations from Brussels to tackle the problems are necessary but insufficient.

The European Commission is right to criticise drugmakers’ practice of extending their monopolies on high cost medicines by keeping out low-cost generic equivalents.
