Japan hopes roads hold holiday gold

Japan’s waning car culture will get a boost this weekend as millions of drivers escape from the country’s urban centres at the start of the May Golden Week holiday.

The government has reduced the cost of driving on expressways as part of its efforts to stimulate the flagging economy. Police and highway officials expect unprecedented traffic jams as a result.
