Oil roared to a new record on Friday yesterday as hedge funds that had bet on a decline in crude prices were forced to exit their short positions.

Nymex July West Texas crude oil jumped $11.33 to a record of $139.12 a barrel, a record one-day gain in dollar terms, and taking the increase over the week to 9.2 per cent.
