Brown wins support to reduce union influence

Gordon Brown won party backing on Tuesday for his plan to dilute union influence on Labour policy, averting a potentially serious confrontation at next week’s politically crucial annual conference in Bournemouth.

The reforms mean Labour’s draft manifesto will be put to a poll of the membership, rather than – as now – subject to the vagaries of the unions’ block votes.
