Japan allows gas drilling in disputed sea zone

Japan on Thursday granted a domestic company the right to test-drill for gas in a disputed area of the East China Sea, ignoring threats from China that doing so would undermine relations between the two countries.

The Ministry of the Economy Trade and Industry said Teikoku Oil will be permitted to analyse energy deposits in the Xihu Trench, which lies east of Shanghai and spans a maritime zone, parts of which China and Japan both claim as their own.
