Austria’s centre-right coalition is limping into a key election year with weak opinion polls, a string of losses in regional votes and a junior partner in total disarray.

Still, chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel is confident his conservative People’s party (OVP) can win the national elections scheduled for next autumn and form the next coalition, with the old or a new partner.
