Nigeria offers to free leader of militant group

Nigeria has offered to extend an amnesty to one of the most prominent militant leaders in the oilproducing Niger Delta, raising hopes of an end to a campaign of sabotage against Africa's biggest oil industry.

President Umaru Yar' Adua announced the details of his offer of a pardon for members of armed groups late on Thursday in his most significant step towards starting a political process to tackle violence in the region.
