US consumers’ confidence is resurgent and the stock market is rising. What is the direction of the arrow of causation between these two statements?

Tuesday’s Conference Board figures on consumer confidence were a big and genuine surprise, with its main index rising from 40.8 to 54.9, rather than the expected 42.
