The Spanish regions of Valencia and Andalusia are Europe’s grocery basket. California’s Central Valley is the US’s equivalent. Both share the ability to produce enough fruit and vegetables to feed a large share of their continent’s population, but they also share a common enemy: climate change.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, declared a state of emergency last July for his state’s farm-rich counties after more than two-and-a-half years of below-average rainfall. “Central Valley agriculture is a $20bn a year industry. If we don’t get them water immediately, the results will be devastating,” he said.
