Administration urged to share credit burden

The US government needs to shoulder a greater share of the burden of dealing with the credit crisis to reduce the pressure on the Federal Reserve, Paul Volcker, former Fed chairman, has said.

Mr Volcker said the central bank’s emergency measures to support market liquidity were stretching its authority to the limit and warned that policymakers had to be “very careful” not to cut interest rates too far and unleash inflation.
