John Lewis chief damps swift recovery hope

Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, has warned against expectations of a swift recovery in consumer spending as profits at its John Lewis department stores halved in the first six months of its financial year.

Although sales and profits rose at Waitrose, helped by the launch of the supermarket’s first value product range, Mr Mayfield remained cautious.
