Migration makes prediction uncertain

The uncertainty inherent in long-term population projections has increased since the last estimates were issued two years ago, as fluctuating patterns of international migration make it harder to predict the pace of change.

The Office for National Statistics stressed yesterday that its latest projections for population growth up to 2031 were no more than a reflection of recent trends in fertility, longevity and migration.
