Cheney hastily cuts short Mideast trip

Dick Cheney, US vice-president, cut short his visit to the Middle East and Asia on Tuesday and returned to Washington in case his tie-breaking vote is needed as Senate leaders try to win approval for several pieces of legislation.

The announcement of Mr Cheney’s early return – forcing the cancellation of planned stops in Saudi Arabia and Egypt – came as the Senate debated a five-year $39.7bn package of spending cuts to federal benefits programmes.
