UPS suffers as economic downturn bites

United Parcel Service said quarterly profit plunged 18 per cent as its domestic package-delivery business slumped - an ominous sign for the health of the US economy.

US package volume, which typically tracks with or slightly above the economy’s gross domestic product, fell 1.3 per cent during the second quarter. The downturn, coupled with surging fuel costs, prompted more customers to seek cheaper shipping alternatives.
