Rout on Wall St leads stocks to record falls

The New York stock market suffered a rout yesterday as a bout of panic selling brought falls almost double those seen on October 28, 1929, the worst day of the stock market crash. The share shakeout was immediately followed by almost frenzied buying in the US bond market.
