Pearl harvests: How to keep your oysters in good health

The delicate underwater eco-system of the oceans is being compomised by pollution with the loss of bio-diversity in the next 20 years estimated to be equivalent to losing a rainforest.

Natural pearls from oysters have already been extinct for 100 years due to a combination of over harvesting and pollution. Pearls on the market now are cultured (a seed is implanted within the oyster encouraging it to secrete pearly nacre around the irritant) but culturing too is based on the natural environment and wildlife.
