News International, Rupert Murdoch's UK stable of newspapers, confirmed James Harding had been named the new editor of The Times, its flagship UK paper, writes Emiko Terazono in London .

Mr Harding, a former Financial Times journalist, was business editor of The Times and replaces Robert Thomson, also an FT alumnus, who has been appointed publisher of The Wall Street Journal.
