Referendum on ethnic citizenship splits Hungarians

Hungarians voted yesterday in a referendum on whether to offer citizenship to millions of ethnic Hungarians living outside the country, including more than 2m outside the European Union.

The EU has not objected to the idea, but the issue has bitterly divided Hungarians and drawn angry reactions from neighbouring countries, notably Romania, that view the proposal as intrusive.
