Weak growth heightens recession fears

The US economy grew at 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter, its slowest pace since 2002, the commerce department said on Wednesday, amid continuing fears of a slide into recession in 2008.

While a slowdown was expected following the 4.9 per cent growth in the third quarter, most analysts were looking for annualised growth of 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent for the quarter.
