Netcare's acquisition of General Healthcare Group - marrying South Africa's largest healthcare provider with the UK's biggest private hospital business - has put a new face on the government's drive to use the private sector for healthcare.

The government is looking to private operators to cater for the increase in the capacity needed to treat NHS patients and to introduce more competition into the supply of NHS care.
