A vigorous defence by Andy Burnham, health secretary, of his view that the NHS itself should be the “preferred provider” of NHS care on Wednesday failed to dispel charges that he has ditched a key Labour policy of using competition to improve healthcare.

In an article in the Health Service Journal, Mr Burnham said he wanted to move the NHS “from good to great” despite the billions of pounds in savings the service will have to make.
