One of the stumbling blocks to Jasper Rees’s boyhood progress on the French horn was the discovery that he was expected to transpose the whole of Schubert’s Great C Major Symphony, while sight-reading, to keep his instrument in tune with the rest of the school orchestra.
One of the stumbling blocks to his success as a writer, some 30 years later, could have been the attempt to transpose his memoir about these experiences for the stage. But no – this transposition goes much more smoothly, producing a droll and thoughtful solo show that is a delightful chamber piece for one man and his horn.
