Protectionist pressures begin to grow

The wildcat strike at the Lindsey oil refinery in Lincolnshire has given Britain the first taste of the bitterness and social unrest that could punctuate the long grind of recession.

About 1,000 workers vented their anger and fear, not at those overseeing the faltering economy, but at a band of Italian contractors who were crossing Europe to refit a plant.
