Viacom targets youth market on the web

Viacom on Wednesday continued its new media shopping spree by agreeing to pay $200m for Atom Entertainment, a collection of four websites that offer online gaming as well as short films and user-generated video.

The deal reflects the continued effort by Viacom’s MTV Networks division to retain its young audience amid competition from new internet competitors such as MySpace, a social networking site, and YouTube, a site that features user-generated video.
