At the end of Samuel Beckett's play, Waiting for Godot, after a great deal of talking and plenty of waiting, the protagonists are told that Mr Godot "won't come this evening but surely tomorrow". London's business community keeps hearing the same message about Crossrail - a long-delayed, £10bn railway line across the city - but waiting has costs, and the Treasury must now commit to funding the project in time for building to start next year.
Crossrail will run through a new tunnel under the West End and City of London. It will almost halve journey times from Heathrow airport to business centres in the City and in Canary Wharf. It will also carry thousands of commuters, easing the load on London's overcrowded, dilapidated, 100-year-old underground railways, and allow employment growth to continue.
