Alitalia unions reject new contracts

Five of nine unions representing workers at Alitalia on Monday rejected new productivity-linked contracts offered by a consortium of Italian investors seeking to rescue the loss-making flag carrier.

People close to the consortium said union acceptance of new contracts, which are 25 per cent merit-related, was a condition for the takeover to go ahead. Negotiations were expected to continue later on Monday.
