Call for reform on NHS consultants

NHS hospitals should not be allowed to bar their consultants from working for private providers of NHS care in their own time, the NHS’s advisory panel on competition said on Wednesday.

The recommendations brought an angry reaction from Unison, the biggest health service union, and warnings that the full ruling may have unintended consequences – discouraging NHS doctors from taking key management and leadership positions in NHS hospitals.
