US novelist John Updike dies

John Updike, the great chronicler of postwar America, died on Tuesday from lung cancer. He was 76.

One of the world’s most celebrated writers, through scores of novels, stories, poems, play and criticism, Updike always returned to his abiding subject: America. He was that rare thing: an unashamedly patriotic conservative writer.
