US economy unlikely to see hard landing in spite of jitters

Paul Samuelson, the Nobel prize-winning economist, once mocked the ability of investors to predict a downturn. "The markets," he said, "had predicted nine of the last five recessions."

Even so the swift slide of shares in New York last Friday, in which the Dow suffered its largest one-day fall since March 2003, raised fears that the strong growth in profits may be starting to flag.
