How Skinner led drive to improve safety at Rio

As chairman of Rio Tinto, Paul Skinner has presided over a period of great change at the mining group .

When he joined in 2003 Rio was known for a conservative and cautious corporate culture. The most recent boom in commodities prices took off the same year and some analysts and investors felt Rio was being left behind as more aggressive rivals, such as Xstrata, went on an acquisition spree.
