The potential damage to tourism caused by London hosting the Olympics is revealed in research published on Thursday showing Beijing is only just starting to recover the number of foreign visitors it enjoyed in the year prior to hosting the 2008 Games.

The Chinese capital suffered a fall of 18 per cent in the 12 months from March 2008, compared to the previous 12 months, said the European Tour Operators Association.
