UK public sector finances weaker than expected

The public finances were weaker than expected in February, according to official figures published on Friday, leaving open the question of whether Gordon Brown will meet his fiscal rules in this economic cycle.

The public sector ran a net surplus of £81m last month, which was much lower than the £2.2bn surplus in February 2004, according to the Office for National Statistics.
