Elan hit after drug linked to brain disease

Shares in Elan lost almost half their value on Friday after Tysabri, the Irish pharmaceutical company’s leading drug, was linked to a potentially lethal brain disease.

The news comes as a fresh blow to the company whose shares plunged this week when Elan reported mixed results from its mid-stage trial of Bapineuzumab, an Alzheimer’s drug being developed with Wyeth.
