WorkWorld Media Awards Recognise Chief Economics Commentator

Last night Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator for the Financial Times, won the AMEC Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 WorkWorld Media Awards. Wolf received the accolade for his outstanding contribution “to the explanation and understanding of the subject of work, business and management”. Wolf said: “I am delighted and honoured to receive this prestigious award, which has been previously won by such distinguished journalists”.

Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, added “This is a huge honour for Martin and is highly deserved. His contribution to the Financial Times over the past twenty years has been immeasurable and this award is recognition of his insight and fine writing.”

The judges commented, “Martin Wolf is a towering figure amongst economics journalists and commentators. He brings both analytical rigour and philosophical principle to his copy, expounding updated classical liberal views in his columns which are read very closely at the top of both business and political worlds. A committed scourge of vested interests, where the free market and the public interest are at odds, he is often to be found arguing the case of the public interest, calling for regulation where he sees it necessary. He has already won many of the main awards in business journalism — now he adds the lifetime achievement award.”

Wolf was appointed chief economics commentator in 1996 and associate editor in 1990. He joined the FT as chief economics leader writer in 1987. Wolf was previously Director of Studies at the Trade Policy Research Centre and before that he was at the World Bank as a Young Professional. He obtained a Master of Philosophy in economics from Oxford University in 1971. Wolf was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2000 for services to financial journalism.

The WorkWorld Media Awards are now in their 21st year and are sponsored by AMEC - the international project management and engineering services company. Will Hutton, chief executive of The Work Foundation said: “The WorkWorlds celebrate the craft of reporting and broadcasting about work and working life. Running since 1986, they remain the key specialist awards for journalists who focus on work, economics, business and management.”
