Balkans correspondent Neil MacDonald visits Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, where the authorities are embarking on a controversial urban revival plan, which includes the construction of massive statues of national heroes.

The project throws a spotlight on Macedonia’s 19-year argument with Greece over who owns the name Macedonia, and the battle over identity, including ownership of the legacy of a classical hero Alexander the Great.

Staking its claim to the legacy, Macedonia is planning a 22 meter – eight storeys – statue of Alexander.
