Circuit City, the beleaguered US electronics retailer, on Monday announced the resignation of Philip Schoonover, its chief executive, in the midst of a continuing turnaround effort.

Mr Schoonover is being replaced by James Marcum, one of three directors placed on Circuit City’s board in June by Mark Wattles, the activist investor.
